How to rank in Perplexity — a practical guide

14 April 2026 · AEO Ireland Team

Perplexity rewards a very specific kind of content. Here's exactly what works, what doesn't, and how to get cited.

Perplexity is the most citation-driven of the major AI engines. Every answer it produces lists the sources it pulled from — which means if you understand what kind of content it pulls, you can engineer your way into those citations.

What Perplexity rewards

  • Clean, scannable structure: clear H1, short paragraphs, descriptive H2s.
  • Original data, statistics, or first-party research it can quote.
  • Direct, declarative answers near the top of the page.
  • Author bios with verifiable expertise and external profiles.
  • Schema markup, especially Article, FAQPage, and Organization.
  • Recency — Perplexity weights freshly published or recently updated content heavily.

What Perplexity ignores

  • Thin, AI-spun content with no original perspective.
  • Pages buried under cookie banners, popups and slow JavaScript.
  • Content that buries the answer ten paragraphs deep.
  • Pages with no clear publication date or author.

A simple template that works

Take the exact question your customer would ask. Make it your H1. Answer it in the first paragraph in two or three sentences. Then expand with a structured breakdown — bullets, sub-headings, examples, original data. Add a short author bio with a link to a credible profile. Mark the page up with FAQPage schema if appropriate. Update the date when you make material changes.

Do that consistently across the questions your buyers actually ask, and you'll start appearing as a Perplexity citation within weeks.
